Most of the time when I write posts I’m thinking of readers who have little if any background in the sciences but are none-the-less interested, just as was the case with many of my favorite students.  I write for those who are not content to know that “it is happening” but also want to know “why” it is happening.  Most of my former college students had a very limited background in mathematics and physics.  They were often surprised that they could learn quite a lot of science without having to get heavy into equations and that my analogies could help them obtain a degree of understanding of some of the principles and concepts which they might have thought were out of their reach.

I expect that this tutorial page will contain a hodgepodge of items but I’m hoping that they prove valuable for those who wish to learn more – particularly about the weather. Most of my weather-related web-log posts are time sensitive and are therefore dated but I’ve included them anyway because they are of a tutorial nature.  If the current weather is your focus, please be mindful of this and check the dates of the postings so that you won’t get misled.

My weblog entries are “heavy” in meteorology but I expect that in time I will be posting more that pertains to physical oceanography and geology and upon occasion I may “use” this medium to discuss subjects unrelated to the earth sciences.
